KUCHING, Feb 10: Sarawak’s proposal to improve the salary scheme of civil servants would attract more individuals of different ethnicities to join the civil service.

Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Secretary-General Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi who welcomes the move made by Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in proposing on enhancing the salary scheme.

“This initiative must be supported by a fairer employment system that gives all ethnicities in Sarawak an equal chance at joining the state civil service.

“As an example, the Dayak and Chinese ethnic groups frequently feel left out and do not get a fair chance at employment in the civil service. With regard to this, I urge the Sarawak State Government to establish a quota system at the recruitment level, where inequality usually begins,” he said this in his social media posting.

Nanta added that the matter often occurred in which, only a few candidates from other ethnicities and non-Malays are given the opportunity to pass the interviews and being recruited.

“This situation, would promptly create a domino effect that led to a low percentage of other ethnicities and non-Malays in high-rank positions in the federal and state government administrations,” he added.

Nonetheless, the Premier’s initiative since helming the Sarawak State Government top leadership, there has been an evident involvement of other ethnic groups in the state civil service.

“Premier Sarawak’s direction in the recruitment system that holds the philosophy that those who have merit will be given opportunities, should be used as a guide to ensure fair opportunities for all,” he said.

He further said that it was also evident that more members of other ethnic groups and non-Malaysia are being appointed to high-ranking positions, be it in the Sarawak Civil Service or government-linked companies (GLC). – TVS
