RM10 million education grant for Chinese independent schools in Sarawak

KUCHING, Aug. 25 : Sarawak United Association of Private Chinese Secondary School Management Boards received a RM10 million education grant from the state government.

The cheque was presented by Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to the boards chairman, Temenggong Datuk Vincent Lau at Premier’s office today.

Vincent Lau in his statement expressed his gratitude to the Sarawak goverment for the allocation and for recognising the positive contribution of Chinese education to the development of the state.

He added that the allocation will help to reduce the burden borne by the schools and it will be distributed to the 14 Independent Chinese Secondary Schools (ICSS) in Sarawak.

“It will be used to help schools that is facing the problem of lacking in students,” he said.

In addition to the education grants, he explained, the main source of income for private schools is through donations from the private sector, the public and a small portion of fees.

“The aid is very helpful towards the schools and students who did not receive any funding from the Federal Government,” he added.

Vincent said that last year, the Sarawak Government also gave a grant of the same amount.

The grant is an annual education grant from Sarawak government to ICSS starting with RM3 million in 2014 to RM10 million in 2021 with the total grant allocation for the past 8 years amounting to RM52 million. – TVS
